BASS ROCK WEDNESDAY 3 AUGUST 2011
SQSAC’s Wednesday evening dives last week involved a dive at the Bass Rock. We had 12 club members on the trip. We dived off Gary Lawson’s boat which over the summer months is berthed at Dunbar. The trip out to the Bass Rock involved a 40 minute journey, so there was plenty of time to get kit ready.
The Bass Rock was shrouded in low cloud when we arrived which made the scene quite atmospheric. We all entered the water on the north east corner and were carried along the wall in a current which at times was over 2 knots. The walls of the Bass Rock on this side have plenty of life on them especially Dead mens fingers, Dahlia anemones, Light bulb sea squirts and Common sea urchins. There were a lot of Common lobsters and Edible crabs on the boulder covered sea floor and also in crevices on the wall. Commons prawns and various other crab species were also seen. Some of the divers saw lots of Scorpion fish.

The low cloud had lifted off the Bass Rock by the end of the diving, so we were able to get a good look at the rock with its huge colony of Gannets.
Tea and coffee was served up for the divers for the trip back to Dunbar.
The 12 divers on this trip were Ally, Debbie, Amy, Callum, Kirsty, Nathan, Leigh, Lesley, Warren, Ronnie, Hilary and Tom. Thanks to Brian Anderson, our skipper who provided a good dive brief and provided words of encouragement as required throughout the evening.
